True VPD starts at the leaf, not the air

Air VPD misses what the plant feels by up to a full kPa. Here is why leaf temperature changes the number, and how to steer on the real one.

Most rooms steer VPD off a sensor bolted to the wall. The number looks right, the logbook looks clean, and the canopy still stalls. The gap is physical: the leaf is not the same temperature as the air around it, so the vapour pressure deficit the plant actually feels is not the one the wall sensor reports.

What VPD is measuring

Vapour pressure deficit is the difference between how much moisture the air could hold at the leaf's temperature and how much it holds right now. The plant transpires into that deficit. Too low and the stomata barely open; too high and the plant closes them to protect itself and stops feeding.

The value that matters is calculated at leaf temperature. Under a full canopy of LED, a transpiring leaf can sit 1–3 °C below air temperature. Feed that into the equation and the real deficit can differ from the air-based number by close to a full kPa.

Why the wall sensor lies

A wall sensor reads room air. It knows nothing about the leaf. So two rooms logging an identical 1.20 kPa can be running very different plants:

The room that thinks it is holding a textbook deficit is quietly pushing the canopy toward the low end, where growth slows and humidity problems start.

Steer on the real number

Measuring leaf temperature directly, with an infrared sensor at the canopy, turns VPD from an estimate into a measurement. Once the real deficit is on a chart you can do three things the wall sensor never let you do:

  • Hold a target the plant actually experiences, run after run.
  • See the canopy drift before it shows in the plant.
  • Catch the cold corner where condensation, and then mould, starts.

The wall sensor tells you about the room. The leaf tells you about the plant. Only one of them is paying the bills.

None of this is exotic. It is the same VPD you already steer on, calculated from the surface that does the transpiring instead of the air two metres away.
